About me
I first was drawn to the industry when I saw Pixar's Toy Story in 1995. I remember sitting in the theatre and being blown away that you could draw and animate artwork with the computer. From then I was hooked. I begged a teacher at my high school to start a vet course in interactive multimedia and graphic design. Every week I would knock on her door and ask if she had been successful in putting a class together.
For the next few years, I immersed myself in my new found passion. I must admit I had my sights set on doing 3D at first until I discovered the wonderful world of web design, user interfaces and multimedia. I worked relentlessly always improving my skills often spending hours practicing techniques in Photoshop.
In 2002 I obtained my Certificate 4 in Interactive Multimedia and was ready to face the world. Due to my passion I was acutely aware that the industry I had chosen was ruthless and very hard to break into. I was not deterred, I began doing some free work for sporting clubs and charities, which then lead me to some freelance work. I had also obtained a positions in computer It wholesalers and retail in which part of my job was to maintain the websites.
I began submitting web designs to free template sites in 2004 when i got my first "flame". I still remember the comment to this day - "good design, but it's in tables, no industry expert would script a website using tables." but if it wasn't for the challenge I found in the response I wouldn't have the knowledge I have today. I set out on my next big hurdle to learn CSS and soon after I applied and was hired as a full time graphic and web designer at Microbits.
After fully exploring the world of CSS and knowing I had conquered another skill. I hankered for a new challenge and soon I delved further into my Photoshop skills and started illustrating, and in 2006 one of my artworks was selected in the Expose annual "Best of the best" books. It had taken me 2 years but reading the email revealing your artwork has been selected as one of the 252 pieces out of 5,000+ submissions from all over the world. No words could express as at the time I was suffering from a major illness that had me crippled on crutches for 18 months.
Due to my illness I had to quit my job and began freelancing more. This allowed me to still work when I was feeling good and rest when I wasn't. I was approached to start lecturing at DMI TAFE on How to use a Wacom tablet with various programmes and Intro to Dreamweaver short courses.
In 2008 I was ready to go back to web design full time and was soon hired at Proof Creative as a Web & Graphic Designer. I have currently been there for the last three years and have had the opportunity to work on some amazing, & challenging projects even taking on the challenge of being the acting senior designer for 11 months.
As you can tell from my history I love to find the challenge in my job and thankfully as technology only gets faster and more intelligent - there is always something new to learn. My next goal is to obtain officially my graphic design qualifications, and them either delve into the world of marketing or web development.
